It gained widespread popularity in the United States during the 20th century, becoming a staple in diners and fast-food chains. Chefs and home cooks alike have put their own spin on this classic, with variations including the addition of cheese, avocado, or different types of bread. Today, the best versions of this dish can be found in diners across the country, where it's often served with a side of crispy hash browns or fresh fruit.
