Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 1/4 cup of cold water
  • 2 cups of golden syrup
  • Zest and juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 1/2 cups of fresh white breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large bowl, mix 1 1/2 cups of flour and a pinch of salt. Add the chilled, diced butter and rub it into the flour using your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  • Add 1/4 cup of cold water and mix to form a dough. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  • Roll out the pastry on a floured surface and use it to line a 9-inch tart tin. Trim off any excess pastry.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together 2 cups of golden syrup, the zest and juice of 1 lemon, and 1 1/2 cups of fresh white breadcrumbs. Pour the mixture into the pastry case.
  • Brush the edges of the pastry with beaten egg. Use any leftover pastry to create a lattice pattern on top of the tart, if desired.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and the filling is set.
  • Allow the treacle tart to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with a dollop of clotted cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Dessert
British

Treacle tart is a classic British dessert with a rich history dating back to the 19th century. It consists of a sweet pastry crust filled with a mixture of golden syrup, breadcrumbs, and lemon zest. The origins of treacle tart can be traced to the English countryside, where it was a popular treat at afternoon teas and family gatherings. Renowned chefs like Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson have featured their own versions of treacle tart, adding a modern twist to the traditional recipe. The best treacle tart can be found in quaint English tearooms and bakeries, particularly in regions like Cornwall and Devon, where the dessert is a beloved specialty. To make the perfect treacle tart, it's essential to use high-quality golden syrup and fresh breadcrumbs to achieve the ideal balance of sweetness and texture. For a unique twist, some chefs incorporate ingredients like ginger or cinnamon to add depth to the flavor profile. Whether enjoyed warm with a dollop of clotted cream or served alongside a cup of tea, treacle tart continues to be a cherished indulgence for dessert enthusiasts worldwide.
