Toffee Apples
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 6 apples
- 1 cup of granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1/4 cup of light corn syrup
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 6 wooden skewers
Instructions
- Wash and dry the apples thoroughly. Remove the stems and insert a wooden skewer into the top of each apple.
- In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of water, and 1/4 cup of light corn syrup. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
- Once the sugar has dissolved, stop stirring and let the mixture come to a boil. Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature. Cook the mixture until it reaches 300°F (hard crack stage).
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and carefully stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Be cautious as the mixture will be extremely hot.
- Dip each apple into the toffee mixture, tilting the saucepan to coat the apple evenly. Allow any excess toffee to drip off before placing the apple onto a parchment-lined baking sheet to cool and harden.
- Repeat the dipping process with the remaining apples, working quickly before the toffee sets.
- Let the toffee apples cool completely before serving. Enjoy!
Toffee apples, also known as candy apples, have a rich history dating back to the early 1900s in the United States. These delightful treats gained popularity at fall festivals and carnivals, where they were often sold as a sweet and sticky indulgence. The combination of crisp, tart apples and sweet, buttery toffee quickly became a beloved classic. Chefs and home cooks alike have put their own spin on the recipe, adding variations such as nuts, chocolate drizzles, or even a hint of cinnamon. Today, toffee apples are enjoyed worldwide, with the best versions often found at local fairs and markets, where they are made fresh and enjoyed immediately. For the best toffee apples, it's crucial to use high-quality, crisp apples such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. The toffee should be cooked to the perfect temperature to achieve a crunchy, yet chewy texture that complements the apple. Some chefs also swear by adding a touch of vanilla or sea salt to elevate the flavor profile. While the traditional method involves dipping the apples in hot toffee, some creative cooks have experimented with alternative techniques, such as drizzling the toffee over the apples for a more artistic presentation. Whether enjoyed as a nostalgic treat or a gourmet dessert, toffee apples continue to captivate taste buds with their irresistible blend of sweet and tangy flavors.
