Gruyere and Caramelized Onion Grilled Cheese
Created by: Howcan Team
Ingredients
- 4 slices of sourdough bread
- 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup of Gruyere cheese, grated
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and golden brown, about 20-25 minutes. Stir in the balsamic vinegar and season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
- Spread 1 tablespoon of butter on one side of each slice of sourdough bread.
- Place 2 slices of bread, buttered side down, on a clean work surface. Divide the grated Gruyere cheese evenly between the two slices of bread. Top the cheese with the caramelized onions, then place the remaining slices of bread on top, buttered side up.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them cool for a minute before slicing in half. Serve hot and enjoy!
