Ingredients
- 6 Twinkies
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups vegetable oil for frying
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together 1 cup of flour, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup of milk and 2 eggs until well combined.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or heavy-bottomed pot to 375°F (190°C).
- Insert a wooden skewer into each Twinkie, leaving enough to use as a handle for dipping.
- Dip each Twinkie into the batter, coating it completely, and allow any excess batter to drip off.
- Carefully place the battered Twinkies into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes, turning them as needed for even browning.
- Remove the fried Twinkies from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve warm.
- Enjoy your delicious deep fried Twinkies!
Deep Fried Twinkies have a fascinating history, originating in the United States as a fairground delicacy. The dish gained popularity in the early 2000s, with chefs experimenting with different batters and frying techniques to create the perfect crispy exterior and gooey interior. The concept of deep frying a Twinkie was first introduced at a restaurant in Brooklyn, New York, and quickly spread to state fairs and food trucks across the country. Today, the best Deep Fried Twinkies can be found at state fairs and specialty dessert shops, where chefs use a variety of batters, including funnel cake batter, to achieve the ideal texture and flavor. For those looking to recreate this indulgent treat at home, it's essential to get the batter just right and ensure the Twinkie is perfectly fried to achieve that irresistible combination of crispy and creamy.
