Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

Created by: Howcan Team

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, dissolve 2 1/4 teaspoons of yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar in 1 cup of warm milk. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the yeast mixture, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/3 cup of melted butter, salt, and eggs. Add 4 cups of flour gradually and mix well until the dough comes together.
  • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a 16x21 inch rectangle. Spread 1/3 cup of softened butter over the dough. In a small bowl, mix together 1 cup of brown sugar and 2 1/2 tablespoons of cinnamon. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture over the buttered dough.
  • Roll up the dough tightly and cut into 12 equal size rolls. Place the rolls in a greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Cover and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  • While the rolls are baking, make the glaze by mixing 1/3 cup of softened butter, 1 1/2 cups of confectioners' sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1 1/2 tablespoons of milk until smooth.
  • Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls and serve. Enjoy!

Cinnamon rolls have a rich history dating back to Sweden, where they are known as "kanelbulle." These sweet, aromatic treats made their way to the United States with Swedish immigrants in the 19th century. Today, they are a beloved pastry enjoyed worldwide. Renowned chefs like Sweden's Magnus Nilsson and the US's Joanne Chang have put their own spin on this classic, adding unique flavors and techniques. The best cinnamon rolls are soft, fluffy, and generously filled with a buttery cinnamon-sugar mixture. For a twist, consider adding chopped nuts or a cream cheese frosting. Whether homemade or from a local bakery, a warm cinnamon roll is a delightful indulgence.
