  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 cup of coleslaw (optional)

Instructions

  • Using your hands or a fork, shred the jackfruit into small pieces, removing any seeds or tough parts.

The BBQ jackfruit sandwich has a fascinating history, originating in Southeast Asia where jackfruit is a staple. This vegan twist on a classic BBQ sandwich gained popularity in the West due to its meaty texture and ability to absorb flavors. Chefs like Roy Choi and restaurants like Jackfruit Cafe in Los Angeles have played a significant role in popularizing this dish. The best version of this sandwich can be found in food trucks and vegan eateries across the US, where slow-cooked jackfruit is infused with smoky BBQ flavors and served with crunchy coleslaw on a soft bun. Perfecting the seasoning and texture of the jackfruit is crucial for an authentic and delicious BBQ jackfruit sandwich.
