Ingredients
- 1 cup of creamy peanut butter
- 1 cup of white sugar
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon of baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt, plus extra for sprinkling
- 1/4 cup of granulated sugar for rolling
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of creamy peanut butter, 1 cup of white sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt. Mix until well combined.
- Shape the dough into 1-inch balls and roll each ball in the 1/4 cup of granulated sugar. Place the coated balls 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
- Using a fork, gently press down on each cookie to create a crisscross pattern. Sprinkle a small pinch of sea salt on top of each cookie.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
- Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy the perfect blend of sweet and salty flavors!
Peanut butter cookies have a rich history dating back to the early 1900s, with their origins often attributed to George Washington Carver, a renowned botanist and inventor. The addition of sea salt adds a delightful contrast to the sweetness of the cookies, elevating their flavor profile. Renowned chefs like Martha Stewart and Ina Garten have popularized this classic treat, incorporating sea salt to enhance the nutty and buttery notes. Today, the best versions of these cookies can be found in artisanal bakeries and specialty dessert shops, where the perfect balance of peanut butter, sugar, and sea salt creates an irresistible indulgence.
