Ingredients
- 1 cup of sesame seeds
- 1 cup of all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup of brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 cup of caramel sauce
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a dry skillet, toast 1 cup of sesame seeds over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly, until golden brown. Remove from heat and let cool.
- In a mixing bowl, cream together 1/2 cup of softened unsalted butter and 1 cup of brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add 1 egg and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the butter-sugar mixture, and beat until well combined.
- Gradually add 1 cup of all-purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to the wet ingredients, mixing until a smooth dough forms.
- Fold in the toasted sesame seeds until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
- Drop teaspoonfuls of the dough onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each for spreading. Flatten each mound of dough with the back of a spoon.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let the benne wafers cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once the benne wafers are cooled, drizzle 1/2 cup of caramel sauce over the top of the wafers.
- Allow the caramel drizzle to set for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your delicious benne wafers with caramel drizzle!
Benne Wafers, a beloved Southern treat, have a rich history dating back to the 17th century when West African slaves brought sesame seeds, or "benne," to the American South. These thin, crispy cookies were originally made by skilled African-American bakers in Charleston, South Carolina, and have since become a cherished tradition in the region. The nutty flavor of the sesame seeds pairs perfectly with the sweet, buttery taste of caramel sauce, creating a delightful combination of flavors and textures. Today, the best version of this dish can be found in local bakeries and restaurants throughout the South, where chefs take pride in preserving this time-honored recipe. The key to making perfect Benne Wafers lies in achieving the ideal balance of sweetness and crunch, and the drizzle of caramel sauce adds a decadent touch that elevates this classic treat to a whole new level. Whether enjoyed on their own or paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, Benne Wafers with a drizzle of caramel sauce are a true Southern indulgence that continues to captivate food enthusiasts around the world.
